Windsor Chairs
Sand
I used 180-grit sandpaper to lightly sand each chair until the glossy topcoat was scuffed. I prefer to do a light sanding on furniture that will be heavily used as it helps with the longevity of the paint.
Primer
I used my Wagner paint sprayer to prime each chair with Bulls-Eye 1-2-3 primer in grey. Once the primer had dried for 24 hours, I lightly sanded the chairs with 240-grit sandpaper to smooth out any imperfections.
Paint & Topcoat
I also applied the paint and topcoat with my Wager paint sprayer to give it a nice smooth finish. Depending on my budget, I’ll either use furniture chalked paint or interior wall paint to save money. If you use a good primer and topcoat you can get away with using interior wall paint but it will require an extra coat of paint. The colour I chose for this set was Onyx by Dulux.
I let the paint dry for 24 hours before applying a matte clear coat. I prefer to use a water-based Varathane topcoat in either a matte or satin finish for a more classic look. I find water-based products are easier to use as you can easily clean your paintbrushes/ paint sprayer with soap and water.
Dining Table
Sand
I used the Ryobi orbital sander on the tabletop since I wanted to remove all of the previous stain in order to bring it back to its original wood colour. I started with 80-grit sandpaper to remove the topcoat and then worked my way up to 200-grit sandpaper. Once the tabletop was back to its original wood, I sanded it with 240-grit sandpaper to give it a nice smooth finish.
Primer
I used the same grey Bulls-Eye 1-2-3 primer to prime the table legs, you could also use a white primer but this is what I had on hand. I chose to paint the legs with a 2″ paintbrush and a small lint-free microfiber roller to create a smooth finish.
Paint & Topcoat
I used the same interior paint, that I used on the chairs, in the colour Onyx by Dulux. I applied the paint with a 2″ paintbrush and microfibre roller to help create a streak-free finish. I applied the same Varathane topcoat, that I used on the chairs, with a 2″ paintbrush for a smooth finish.
Tabletop
I applied 1 coat of Varathane Early American stain, then added I coat of Varathane Weathered Oak on top to give it an aged grey tint. I applied the stain with a lint-free cloth and wiped it off after each application.
Varathane Triple Thick One Coat Clear Finish is my favourite topcoat to use on tabletops since it’s incredibly durable. I prefer to use a matte or satin finish to give my pieces a more classic style. Once the topcoat has dried for 24 hours, I sand it with 240-grit sandpaper to give it a nice smooth finish.
