10 Essential tools for beginners

Here is a list of the top 10 essential tools for beginners.

Are you thinking of DIYing but don’t know where to start? Here is the list of tools I wish I had when I first began my home renovation journey. DIYing doesn’t have to be complicated with these 10 essential tools for beginners.

  1. Drill
    • A drill is my number 1 essential item for DIYing, it is a tool I use consistently for most of my DIYs. I personally use the brand Ryobi because it is more affordable and they have a ton of variety. They also claim not to change their batteries because many brands change the shape of their batteries making the tools useless once the batteries die.

  2. Screwdriver
    • A screwdriver is necessary for smaller jobs where you have delicate screws that risk being stripped. I prefer to use an interchangeable screwdriver rather than carrying several screwdrivers on me.

  3. Hammer
    • Hammers are always necessary to take out old nails or for installing small items like hanging pictures. Since most of my projects use screws, I don’t use them very often but they are essential to have.

  4. Tape Measure
    • Measuring tapes are key and so is learning how to read them. The smallest lines are 1/16th of an inch (1/16, 3/16, 5/16, 7/16, 9/16, 11/16, 13/16, 15/16), the second largest lines are 1/8th of an inch (1/8, 3/8, 5/8, 7/8), the next largest lines is a 1/4 of an inch and the second largest line is half an inch. Learning these measurements greatly helped my accuracy rather than just guessing to the closest 1/4 of an inch.

  5. Speed Square With A Level
    • A square is another item I will not go without since it creates a perfectly straight cut with very little effort. Jobs go by faster since I can place my square on a piece of wood and run my circular saw along it creating the perfect straight cut.
    • Levels are also incredibly important since you want your items to be nice and straight. I love having the level on my square for convenience reasons and creating the perfect level and square angles.

  6. DrillBit Set
    • There’s nothing better than having everything you need all in one place, I would recommend buying a Drillbit set with as many options as possible because you wouldn’t believe the amount of old screws that are not a standard size.

  7. Oscillating Multi-Tool
    • These tools are amazing for cutting those hard-to-reach angles or stubborn old nails and metal. They also come with several accessories for cutting and sanding a variety of surfaces.

  8. Brad Nailer
    • Say goodbye to hammering with this power tool! I almost never use a hammer now that I have a nail gun, your project will take almost no time to install and look much cleaner with tiny finishing nails that sink into the wood.

  9. Circular Saw
    • This saw is great since you can easily take it anywhere and cuts long pieces of board that a mitre saw wouldn’t be able to cut. We often use ours for outdoor projects when we don’t want to pull out our giant mitre saw.

  10. Mitre saw
    • I love using a mitre saw for trim, they create the perfect 45-degree angles and have made my finishing work look more professional. I used this tool for all of our crown molding and baseboards as well as all the trim on our kitchen cabinet surround and kitchen island.
