Mid-Century Dresser Makeover

How I Quickly Flipped This Old Mid-Century Dresser

Sand

I gave the dresser a light sanding to rough up the surface in order to help the primer stick, I don’t typically do this on all furniture but I prefer to do it on veneer surfaces. I also wanted to have an accent drawer so I completely sanded the stain off the top drawer. I love using this Ryobi orbital sander, if you don’t already have one, they also have an electric version if you don’t want to use batteries.

Primer

I prefer to use the Zinsser BIN primer to ensure that no stains bleed through the paint and it also helps with durability. Be sure to use a roller with this primer as it dries Extremely fast, you can also use the Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 primer for an easier application.

Accent Drawer

I found that a piece will sell much faster when you add something unique, like an accent drawer. I used a light whitewash, 25% white paint, and 75% water, on the top drawer to add a bit of character. I wiped off any excess paint and continue to add more coats until I get the colour I like.

Drawer Liner

If you want to save money then you can just paint the inside of the drawer rather than pay for a liner. If the inside of the drawers are in good condition then just leave them natural. I used 2 coats of the Bulls Eye 1-2-3 primer, in grey, to make sure it covered any stains.

Paint

I prefer to use white paint most of the time in order to appeal to the masses. I added 2 coats of Linen White Rustoleum Chalked Paint with a roller and brushed the areas that the roller couldn’t reach. You can also use a spray gun for this but I didn’t feel it was necessary since it was mostly flat surfaces.

Topcoat

A topcoat will add durability and make your furniture look more professional. Once the paint had dried for 24 hours, I added 2 coats of Polycrylic topcoat. You can also use the Chalked Paint Matte finish, I found that the Polycrylic matte finish looks slightly glossy.

Handles

You can spray-paint your old handles but I chose to buy new ones to add more value to my dresser. I love to use these handles from Amazon because they are inexpensive and cover the old handle holes. I used the brushed gold 3 3/4″ handle but they also come in a 5″ with a few other colour options. They are my go-to handles and they always get a ton of compliments, you can find them here.

Price Accordingly

Be sure to research the worth of the piece and price accordingly. I was able to price this dresser, which I found for free, for $200. I will usually price my items competitively so that they sell within a few days but it’s completely up to you.
