Vintage Dresser Makeover

How I Gave This Old Vintage Dresser New Life

Sanding

I started by sanding the drawers with an orbital sander using 80-grit sandpaper and then using 220-grit sandpaper once the stain was removed.

I gave the dresser a light sand using 180-grit sandpaper to get rid of any imperfections and to give the primer a better surface to adhere to.

Primer

I applied the Bulls Eye 1-2-3 primer, in white, with a 2-inch brush and lint-free microfibre roller to create a smooth surface to paint on.

Stain

I started by using the Varathane Hazelwood stain and added the Varathane Weathered Oak on top once it was dry to tone down the color. Once it had dried overnight, I applied 2 coats of the Varathane Soft Touch Matt Finish with a 2-inch brush.

Paint

In order to save money, I decided to use interior wall paint in the colour Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore. I applied 3 coats of paint with a 2-inch brush and a lint-free microfibre roller to create a nice smooth finish. I find that using a roller gives it a more professional look since you can’t see any brush strokes.

Once the paint had dried overnight, I applied 2 coats of the Varathane Soft Touch Matt Finish with a 2-inch brush. I prefer this topcoat to others because it doesn’t show brush strokes and has a nice matte finish.

Knobs

I love keeping vintage knobs for these dressers and decided to paint the original knobs the same grey as the rest of the dresser. I only had 6 matching knobs so I had to buy another 2 two matching knobs for $3. I love how the knobs turned out and it’s an easy way to save money.

Drawers

I typically leave the drawers if they are in good shape but these drawers had a bit of discoloration in them. I applied 2 coats of Gray Owl By Benjamin Moore to freshen them up. You could also use a drawer liner or wallpaper but I wanted to save as much money as possible on this flip.
